Son of Richard Durgin and Hannah Leavitt.


First Enlistment: Enlisted in the U.S. Army at Boston on 19 Jul 1842; Jan-Jul 1845 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri with 2nd Dragoon D.C.; Mexican-American War: Wounded 25 April 1846 in an engagement with the Mexicans; discharged 19 July 1847 at Pueblo, Colorado at expiration of term of service.


Second Enlistment: Civil War: Enlisted as a 2nd Sergeant in Co. A, 26th Iowa Infantry Regiment on 30 Aug. 1862; at own request reduced in rank to Full Private on 24 Mar 1863; died of disease at Vicksburg on 28 Jul 1863
