Polly Alma Knowles, daughter of George and Elizabeth Knowles, was born on a farm near Appleton, Wisconsin, on March 25, 1858, and departed this earthly life at her home, March 30, 1947, having reached the ripe old age of 89 years and 5 days.

She came with her family from Appleton, Wisconsin, in her young womanhood, by way of covered wagon train, and came directly to Delphos and settled here in the year of 1877.

On December 23, 1884, she was joined in marriage to William F. Sampson and to this union four children were born, Jennie and George of Delphos, Gaylord, who preceded her in death while an infant, and Rexford, who lived in Los Angeles, Calif.

She is survived by her children, Jennie B. Waylan, George and Rex, one sister, Mrs. Delia Bancroft of Fairhope, Ala., four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Mrs. Sampson was a lifelong member of the Spiritualist Church formerly of Delphos but of late years at Wells, Kansas, and was always a diligent worker as long as health permitted.

She is the last charter member of the Delphos Benevolent Rebekah Lodge of Delphos, and no night was too cold or stormy to keep her away, health permitting.

She, with her brother Chase, attended school at KSAC college at Manhattan.

I shall never think of her as dead –
The mother who went away,
And left me as the shadows fell
In the evening, cool and gray.

The shaded lamp, the quiet room
A cricket in the grass
The curtains moved by gentle winds
Footfalls of those who pass.

The friendliness of gleaming lights,
A neighbor at the door,
With voice subdued by sympathy
I had not known before.

Oh, no! Oh, no! She could not be
Too far away to know
That I am waiting for her here
I, who always loved her so.

This s not hope that long deferred
Brings tears and sighing breath
But conscious of Presence
The victory of Life! Not death.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon with Rev. H.G. Feldmann officiating.

Singers were G.F. Rollings, Mrs. Ethel Thurston, Mrs. John Richards, and G.F. Griggs with A.S. Adams, accompanist.

Pallbearers were Robert Arheart, Clarence Cain, Gail Garrison, Melvin Waylan, Melvin Waylan, Jr., and Waldean Waylan. Burial was in the Delphos Cemetery with the Rebekahs in charge of the graveside service. Hartley Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
