"Van" came to Oklahoma to attend the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond. He went to work for the Oklahoma Natural Gas Company where he retired in 1959 as District Superintendant of the Muskogee District. After his death he was name "Best Man in the Company". He hired several men (and trained them) who rose up in the company. In particular, Mr. Charles C. Ingram who retired as President. He was a Mason and a Shriner and a member of the Sertoma Club. He was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church.

He was born in Bethel, Bath County, Kentucky the son of Lee Orlando and Edna Judy VanArsdale.
