Of the seven Cahill girls three became nuns and served in North America. Four of the five boys emigrated to the United States. Two of these were ordained priests: Father Kevin and Rev. Msgr. David Cahill.
After finishing secondary school at St. Brendan's School in Killarney, Kevin entered St. Kieran's diocesan college in Kilkenny. Here he was recruited as a prospective Carmelite postulant for the Chicago Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary.
In June of 1914, he and another young postulant set off for Carmel in America. Kevin went to Carmel at Niagara where he began his studies in Philosophy under Fr. Telesphorus Zazza. In his postulancy years Kevin received the religious name, Brother Gregory. After a period of time in postulancy, Kevin decided to continue his studies for the priesthood in the Diocese of Buffalo where his brother David was a seminarian. Both were ordained priests for the Diocese of Buffalo, New York on December 20, 1919.
In 1921, Father Kevin decided to return to Carmel and he pronounced solemn vows in 1925. In the next 59 years he served in many posts of the Carmelites: as teacher, treasurer, provincial vocation director, rector of Mount Carmel Minor Seminary at Niagara, Ontario, Canada (1930-1945), founder and rector of a new Carmelite Junior seminary at Hamilton, Massachusetts, and pastor of St. Mary in Closter, New Jersey. Finally he returned to Ireland and was vocation director again, this time recruiting seminarians for work in South America from 1962-1984.
