Laird Romnee Hensel, 47, died in a vehicular accident December 3, 2009 at Bemidji, Minnesota.

He was born May 16, 1962 in Cloquet, Minnesota to Roland and Karen Hensel of Bemidji, Minnesota. He moved with his parents and brother Craig to Bemidji in 1963. He attended Lincoln Elementary School and in 1973 was a soloist with Bemidji's original Boys Choir organized and directed by Dr. Dwight Sherwood. He attended Bemidji High School lettering in Shot and Discus, also lettering in football, playing center in 1979 and 1980. He was also active in music, playing drums in the concert and marching band winning honors in the Who's Who in Music with their prestigious music award. During high school and college he had the rock band Crossfire. He and the group played in North Dakota, Northern Wisconsin and Northern Minnesota. He attended Bemidji State University graduating in 1990 with a degree in Environmental Studies. He was employed by Hubbard County and worked in the Environmental Services – Zoning Department for 18 years. He also had his own consulting firm – Hensel Consulting and Design. He married Rita Hannem in 1986 and they had two sons – Zachary and Zane. They were divorced in 1995. Laird was an avid outdoorsman; hunting wild turkeys in Montgomery, Minn. at his brother's farm with his dad and brother and for Laird, deer season started in September and ended in December. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited, Deer Hunters Association and Gees Unlimited, which has been discontinued.

He is survived by his parents, Roland and Karen Hensel of Bemidji, Minn.; brother Craig (Julie) Hensel of Montgomery, Minn.; sons, Zachary and Zane Hensel of Bemidji, Minn.; special lady Roxann Yliniemi of Park Rapids, Minn. and twins, Aidan and Nadia Yliniemi-Hensel of Park Rapids, Minn.; aunts, Edna Matten of Wrenshall, Minn., Carol Aenne of Tenstrike, Minn. and Eugenia Vinje of Bemidji, Minn.; uncle James Hensel of Bemidji, Minn. and godson Joshua Hensel of Duluth, Minn.; and numerous cousins.

Laird was preceded in death by his grandparents, Alexander and Edna Maitland of Wrenshall, Minn. and Eugene and Gladys Hensel of Bemidji, Minn.; also aunts, Donna Hensel Olson of Bemidji and Irene Hensel Smodell of Bemidji, Minn.

Funeral Services will be 1:00 PM, Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at First Lutheran Church, Bemidji, Minn. with Pastor Jim Darchuk officiating. Visitation will be 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home and one hour prior to service at church. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji, Minn. Arrangements are entrusted to the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji, Minn.

Pall Bearers will be Steven Turner, Rollie Turner, Randy Pippert, Gary Lechner, John Vinje, Jeff Hensel and Cole Hensel.
