Charlotte Rector is the first known wife of William Hayden Stockton. Four years after the death of Charlotte, William, married Emaline Broyles on 2 May 1842, Rhea County, TN. Wm and Emaline had 8 known children. The Stockton family moved to Texas.

The Stockton family are found in the 1860 census of Buchanan County, P. O. Palo Pinto, Texas. Buchanan County was named after President James Buchanan. The name was changed to Stephens County soon after 1860 census.

After the death of Emaline, 6 Sep 1867 in Texas, William moved to Raton, Colfax County, New Mexico. Some of his children stayed in Texas.

With his son, Matthias Broyles Stockton, they helped Thomas Leonidas "Lee" Stockton, finish the building of the famous Clifton House, 8 miles south of Raton, Colfax County, New Mexico. Lee later moved to Silver City, Grant County, NM, area where he died.
