Elmer served in the US Marine Corps from 1913 to 1919, stationed in places such as Puerto Rico, Guam, San Juan, the Philippines, and Russia. Upon his discharge at the end of World War I he returned home to Parkdale where he met Alma at a church social – she was playing the piano to entertain others, he was there to get something to eat. They were wed at Riverside Church in Hood River on 29 March 1922. He was a Carpenter and member of Carpenter’s Union Local 1896, and an Elder of Hood River Valley Christian Church. How does one write an entire life in one short paragraph? He was a quiet, dignified and decent man who worked hard, built his own home, put in a garden every year, read newspapers daily and always voted Republican. He was a dear sweet man with gentle smile and quiet sense of humor and was the kindest man I've ever met.
