Christian Basinger Succumbs to Long Illness at Columbus Grove
COLUMBUS GROVE, May 4 - (Special) - Christian Basinger, 78, retired bank president, horse breeder and shipper, died Sunday morning at his home on S. High-st, following an illness extending over more than a year.
He was born on a farm in Riley-tp and has resided in Putnam-co practically his entire life. For many years he resided on a farm on the Ridge-rd, two and one-half miles east of Columbus Grove, where he erected the large barn in which his breeding and shipping of fine horses was carried on.
Basinger made several trips to France to obtain Percheron and other fine breeds of horses, in which he dealt extensively.
He was president of the People's bank, now known as the People's Exchange bank, at the time of its organization more than 25 years ago and served many years in that capacity. At present, he was not identified with the bank, having disposed of all his interests. He also conducted farming on an extensive scale at his Ridge-rd home many years ago.
He is survived by three children, Mrs. Frank Lugibill and William Basinger, both of Columbus Grove and by Levi Basinger, of Mobile, Ala., all of whom were present at his bedside when death came.
Mrs. Edward Laible, of Columbus Grove, is a sister and John Basinger, east of Columbus Grove, is a brother. Nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren are his descendants.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at St. John's German church, east of Pandora. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
