Johann Lemburg was born in Süderhastedt, Kreis Dithmarschen, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, the son of Hans and Dorthea Lemburg. He married Dorthea Neuhöfel on May 14, 1881, and they emigrated to America with his sister Catharina [Lemburg] Schade and brother-in-law Claus Schade, his brother, Hans Heinrich Lemburg, and their nephew Hans Heinrich Lemburg. He homesteaded a quarter section in Howard County, Nebraska, and then donated a site for a school in the SE corner of his land (source: School Record Book for District #47, Howard Co., Nebraska).
