LUSH, DOROTHY HIGDON, 80, passed away Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at Nazareth Home in Louisville, KY. Born March 22, 1930 in Grayson County, KY to Lawrence Higdon and Laura Mudd, she earned her bachelor's degree from Western Kentucky University and her Master of Education from Catherine Spalding. She was married in Grayson County to Joyce Lush, who preceded her in death in 1987. A native of Grayson Co. and a retired school teacher, Dorothy taught in the county and Catholic school systems for 41 years, impacting the lives of countless children with her expectations of excellence and her patience and love. Her strong passion and commitment to education continued after retirement during which she helped many adults earn their GED. A devoted Christian and instrument of God, she was an active member of Our Mother of Sorrows parish for 46 years. She attended daily Mass and Holy Hour and her life was truly a testament of her faith to all who knew her. Throughout her retirement she volunteered at numerous ministries throughout Louisville, including Home of the Innocents, Volunteers of America, and Hospitality House. Archbishop Kelly honored her service by commissioning her in Lay Ministry Formation. Her compassionate heart and humble spirit touched all who knew her. Dorothy cherished her family and friends, and time spent with them. Her home and heart were open to her family and friends who valued her quick wit, her zest for life, her generous spirit, her listening ear, and her example of faith. She spent most every Saturday with her devoted granddaughter, Brittany, attending Mass and enjoying dinner at some special place. Besides her husband, Joyce, she was preceded in death by her beloved granddaughter, Jessica; and her nephew, Carroll Skaggs, whom she considered a brother. She is survived by her children, Michael Lush (Diana), Joy Cox, Kevin Lush (Linda), Chris Lush, all from Louisville, Mary Kay McCubbin (Kevin), Madison, IN, and David Lush (Lori), Winston-Salem, NC; her niece, Elizabeth Clemons (Norman) and her nephew, Jim Skaggs (Joyce), who were like brothers and sisters; her grandchildren, Gregory Lush, Karyn Wright, James Barrett Cox, Brittany Cox, Ryan Lush, Taylor McCubbin, Nicholas McCubbin, McKenna Lush and Julianne Lush; great-grandchildren, Rebekah Wright, Jayme Wright, Laynie Cox and Peyton Knox. Her funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, February 4, 2011 at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, 770 Eastern Pkwy., with burial in St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery, Grayson County. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the extraordinary staff at Nazareth Home for their loving care of their mother for the last two years. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be sent to Nazareth Home, 2000 Newburg Road, Louisville, KY 40205.
