When Johnnie first enlisted in the US Army he was 17 years old. His last enlistment was during 15 February 1960.
Upon arriving in Vietnam 18 July 1965, Johnnie was assigned to B Company, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, USARV. The battalion was participating in Operation Gibraltar on a search and destroy operation, at An Ninh (1), in the vicinity of the Vinh Thanh Valley and 12 kilometers northwest of Binh Khe. Upon the helicopters landing B Company was engaged by hostile forces. Johnnie was wounded while directing his men against the hostile forces. Realizing
that his men might be all killed to gave orders to fall back. Johnnie was covering the retreat when he died as a result of gunshot wounds to the body from hostile automatic weapons fire.
SSgt Faircloth served his country for 8 years.
Survived by his father, Horace Faircloth of 1101 1st Street, Cordele, Georgia and his mother, Myrtle R Faircloth of Route #6, Cordele, Georgia.
