George Meyer grew up on a farm in Hanceville, Alabama. At age 18 he tired of picking cotton and digging peanuts and went to work in Birmingham, Alabama at $1 a day for Henry Hahn who operated a sheet metal shop. Henry Hahn was raised by George's parents who brought him to America at age 9. He was one of the many children of George's father's sister who couldn't afford to support them. In 1915 George quit work and traveled. He stopped in Omaha to see Mayme Hamann who he met in 1907 when she and Sophie Schneider visited George's sisters Anna and Sophie who had met them while working for some "rich" people in Omaha. George also went to the World's Fair in San Francisco, to Los Angeles and San Diego where he attended the Panama-California Exposition, Balboa Park in San Diego 1915. He then went to Dallas,Texas where he worked until 1917. On June 17, 1917 he married Mayme Hamann in Omaha. They lived in Birmingham, Alabama for a few months and then moved to Omaha where he worked for a sheet metal shop owned by a man named Farmer. About three years later his brother Henry came to Omaha and they started Meyer Brothers Tin Shop on 13th St. between Howard and Jackson. Henry and George had disagreements and Henry moved to Houston about 1931. George and Clarence Henderson continued the business.
