John Downs was born in 1745 in Orange County, Virginia; son of William and Margaret Downs.

John was united in marriage in 1768 in Virginia to Catherine Hawkes.

John and Catherine were the parents of eight children:

1. William (1769-1837) married Catharine Lowery
2. Susanna (1770-1848) married David Avis
3. John (1773-1847) married Caroline Holder
4. James (1778-1848) married Sarah "Ann" Snodgrass
5. Jane (1779-1826) married Gideon Coover
6. Rebecca (1780-1856) married Jacob Cryder
7. David (1783-1851) married Julia Ann Weider
8. Thomas (1785-1863) Susanna Figert

John Downs, Sr. served during the Revolutionary War in the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 9th Virginia Regiments.

Aug. 29, 1782: John Downs was issued Warrant #5, 100 acres of land in the Virginia Military District in Ohio, for three years service in the Virginia Continental Line.

John Sr. passed away 20 Jun 1805 in Hopetown, Springfield Township, Ross County, Ohio at the age of 60 years. He was laid to rest in Hopetown Cemetery, Hopetown, Springfield Township, Ohio.

Catherine passed away in 1805 at the age of 57 years. She was laid to rest in Hopetown Cemetery, although no stone was found.
