Miss Alverta M. Krout, a retired school teacher, died at the Bange Convalescent Home, Iron Ridge, on Monday morning April 8, 1957. She was a guest at the home for about four weeks. Her age was 78 years and 2 days. Miss Alverta was the daughter of the late Charles B. and Adaline Olp Krout, and lived with her sister, Mrs. Ida C. Henry, near York New Salem. Surviving, beside her sister, are two half brothers, Charles A. Krout and William R. Krout, both of York. Miss Alverta was a life-long and faithful member of Friedensaal's Church, the Sunday School and Missionary Society. For many years she taught a Sunday School Class. Funeral services were held from the Geiple Funeral Home on Thursday afternjoon, Apr. 11.
Interment was made in Friedensaal's cemetery.

Miss Alverta never married and was teacher of Shusters school for many years. She taught my Dad. Put her neices (daughters of sister Ida Henry) through high school and college.
Drove an automobile in the 1930's.
She attended Millersville Teachers College and taught at Shuster's School for many years until her retirement in 1932. She lived with Sarah Henry and her sister Ida Henry the large part of the house on the Henry homestead off Yellow Church Road (later owned by Old Dutch Farms and then Alvin Sweitzer) All buildings gone now (2010). The part Miss Alverta lived in was of logs and probably the original house., She put 3 of sister Ida's daughters through High School and College in the 1930's. Drove them to York every day. She was one of the very few women who drove in the 1920's and 30's. She was a life-long member of Friedensaal's Lutheran Church and Sunday School, a charter member of the Women's Missionary Society and teacher of The Ladies Bible Class for many years. After Sarah Henry died and Ida's girls had left home, she and sister Ida moved to a house with a stone front near Young's (now Rutters) store near York New Salem.
She taught at Shuster's school for many years and Earl Smith told of her putting newspapers inside the coats of the younger, poorer children to keep them warm.
