Martin Cansler enlisted for Civil War service at age 25 on March 15, 1862 in Company C, 1st Artillery, 10th Regiment, North Carolina State Troops. He was wounded at Curl's Neck, Virginia on June 30th, 1862. He survived the rest of the War and was paroled at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865, and then returned to Gaston County where he lived until his death on November 10, 1919 at the age of 83.
