-- ROCK HILL - Mr. Alexander Randal "Legs" Barnette of 519 Washington St. died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.
The funeral will be noon Saturday at New Mount Olivet AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Sherman B. McBeth Sr. officiating and the Rev. Dr. Z.B. Wells assisting. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Barnette attended Emmett Scott High School and graduated from Clinton Junior College. He was an Army medical corpsman serving with the 93rd Division in World War II. He played baseball with the Army Team, Black Sox of New York, and Elite Giants in Winston-Salem, N.C. He was an insurance agent for the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Co. He retired from Pilgrim Life Insurance Co. as a field agent and debit manager. For more than 50 years, he was a member of New Mount Olivet AME Zion, where he served on the steward board and as secretary. He was the Sunday school musician, lay council member, honorary life member of the Missionary Society and a member of the Clinton College Alumni Club.
Surviving are two daughters, Jacqueline B. Gladney of Columbia and Marjorie Glymph of Blythewood; his son, the Rev. Rufus R. Barnette of Charlotte; and eight grandchildren.
The body will be taken to the church at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Robinson Funeral Home is in charge.
