James moved his family to Mt. Healthy about 1920 or 1921 from Plymouth, OH. He and his wife raised their children in Mt. Healthy.

There was a small 6 room house on the property as well as a barn. The barn was in pretty good shape but they "had to do something" with the house. He and his wife, with a little help from the kids, transformed a little "shack" into what we called their Mansion, with 12 rooms.

James worked for years at Proctor & Gamble. I was told that he installed the first intercom system that existed anywhere, in that factory.

We used to love having reunions at Grandma and Grandpa's house because of the watermelons. At one corner of the house there was a well. There was the traditional "Wishing Well" structure over it, complete with the bucket and ladel.

Grandpa would put several watermelons in gunny sacks and lower them to within six inches of the water about a week or so before the reunion. Those turned out to be THE coldest and juiciest melons I have ever eaten in my life.

I was only seven when we lost him but I do remember two things about him.

1. He could set off a mouse trap on his thumb and not even flinch. He often sat us on his lap when he did that and tempted us to do it. I don't think he ever had anyone do it too.

2. He always had tobaco leaves hanging in the garage. We had to go through the garage to get into the house and all we could smell was those leaves. That smell still brings back memories of him.

James and his wife taught their children to love and respect everyone and that was passed down to several generations.

NOTE: I would like to thank Ralph R. Baechle (#35995407)
for his efforts in getting the picture of my grandfather's memorial.
