Longtime Eagle River resident Floyd Smith, 93, died June 21, 2006, peacefully at home, surrounded by family. A funeral was held at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E St. A graveside service with military honors was afterward at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born Nov. 1, 1912, in Reuben, Ore., to Fred and Elizabeth (Abernathy) Smith. Through his mother he became a member of the Karuk Tribe of California, Klamath Nation. After schooling in California, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, forerunner of the U.S. Air Force. He served three years of World War II in New Guinea and Australia, followed by tours of duty in California, Arizona, Pennsylvania and New York, and two years with the Air Attache office in Lima, Peru, as engineer crew chief on the C-47 assigned to the ambassador's office. He served two years on the Greek island of Crete and three years at Malstrom Air Force Base in Montana, two years at McCoy Air Force Base in Florida and three years at Elmendorf Air Force Base, where he retired after 31 years of service. After retirement he drove a tour bus in the summer and school bus in the winter. During his military service, he enjoyed participating in bowling, football, baseball and handball. He bowled on a traveling Air Force bowling team. While stationed in Lima, Peru, he bowled a perfect game of 300. He also enjoyed card games -- cribbage, bridge, pinochle and poker, as well as crossword puzzles (which he worked with a pen) and woodworking. He was a member of the Anchorage Cribbage Club, serving for a time as president, and participated in local and national cribbage tournaments. Family wrote: "He will be missed by his many friends in the bowling and cribbage communities and by many friends in the Eagle River area."

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Phyllis; son and daughter by a previous marriage, Paul Smith of Anchorage and Vicki Eckrote of Barstow, Calif.; stepchildren and spouses, Debbie and Bill Tandeske of Eagle River, Mike Stewart of McGrath, Scott and Jung Stewart of Anchorage; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Providence Hospice. Arrangements were made with Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E St.
