George C. Theofanis, 79, Indianapolis, passed away January 30, 2011. He was born March 22, 1931 in New York City, NY. George married Colleen F. (Junker) Theofanis December 22, 1952. He was in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He received his undergraduate and Masters degrees from Butler University. George taught at Avon High School from 1957-1962. He also taught at Shortridge High School from 1962-1970. He was the assistant basketball coach from 1962-1966 and head basketball coach from 1967-1970 at Shortridge HS. His team was state runner up in 1968. George was the head basketball coach at Butler University from 1970-1978 where he was I.C.C. coach of the year twice. He worked for ITT Educational Service from 1978 until his retirement in 1995. George was an Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame inductee in 2000. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Colleen; son Tony (Mary) Theofanis; daughter Stephanie (Frank) Beatty; son-in-law Bill Carmichael; grandchildren Allison, Morgan, Gus, Grace and Megan. Welcoming George in heaven are his parents, brothers James (JT) and Chris ; daughter Sophie and son Gus and many others. Visitation will be held Saturday, February 5 from 9am-1pm with a Mass of Christian Burial at 1pm at St. Christopher Catholic Church, 5301 W. 16th St., Speedway, 46224, where he was a member. The family asked in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to the Alzheimers Association. Arrangements are entrusted to Stevens Mortuary and Family Center. www.stevensmortuary.net
