A resident of Baton Rouge, he died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011. He was 87, a native of Centreville, Miss., and a U.S. Army veteran.

Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., with a service conducted by his family. A private graveside service will be held at Oaklawn Cemetery in Centreville.

Survived by daughter, Jeanette and husband Camille LaRussa; son, Richard and wife Beth Gayle, of Atlanta; sister, Edith Neyland; and four grandchildren, Jamille and GeorgeAnn LaRussa, and Gip and Taylor Gayle.

Preceded in death by his wife, Helen Donellan Gayle, who was Miss Baton Rouge 1950 and a professional model.

He attended Catholic High School, where he was a member of the football, baseball and boxing teams. An AAU Southern Golden Gloves champion, he fought in the National Golden Gloves Touranment in Chicago. From 1945 to 1951, Gip played minor league baseball in the Southern, Carolina and Texas leagues; he was also a proud player of the Baton Rouge Red Sticks.
