Henry was the second of seven children born to George Philipp Gutmann and Katherine Louise Wenzel. Along with his parents and siblings he immigrated to the United States in 1884. He married Mary Sweeney and they had six children: Frank, Claude, Viola, Leona, Carl and George. At the time of his death he was a deputy jailer. Henry died at his home, 1781 Wilson Avenue, of pneumonia and influenza at the age of 50. He was a victim of the 1918 Spanish Influenza Pandemic.
