J. H. Eaton, assessor in Van Buren Twp., provided the newspaper with a list of men in that township who were then over 80 years of age. Jesse R. Goss' age was listed as 84.

Jesse R. Goss, the venerable father of Mrs. Ed. Thrasher and Mrs. Charles Anderson, this city, is lying at the point of death at his daughter's home, Mrs. Anderson, West 7th Street. Mr. Goss is, perhaps, the oldest man in the county, being in his 96th year.

Abigail Osborne, b. February 26, 1778 Grayson Co., VA & d. March 01, 1849 Ashe Co., NC, daughter of Capt. Enoch Osborne and Jane Hash.
