Charles Montgomery Toothman, 101 and 10 months, of Fairview passed away Friday (June 22, 2007) at Fairmont General Hospital.

He was born Aug. 17, 1905, in Fairview, the second oldest son of the late Homer and Minnie Tennant Toothman.

Mr. Toothman worked 38 years as a coal miner at the Grant Town Federal No. 1 and was a member of the UMWA local No. 4047. In 2006 he received a letter from the national office of the United Mine Workers of America recognizing him as the oldest dues-paying member of the UMWA in the United States.

For 10 years, he was a farmer on his farm on Rush Run near Fairview. He later lived 15 years in Fairmont before moving to Florida for health reasons. He spent the first 15 years of his retirement in Lakeland, Fla., tending a small garden and orange grove in his backyard. Following his wife Ruby's death in 1980, he spent his summers in West Virginia and the winters in Florida for the next 20 years. In 2000, Mr. Toothman gave up driving at the age of 95, sold his home in Florida and moved back to West Virginia.

He was a Christian and enjoyed spending time with his loving family.

Mr. Toothman is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Mary Marguerite and Charles Tennant of Fairview; two grandchildren and their spouses, Joe Bill and Gladys Tennant of Tampa, Fla., and Donna and Francis Turner of Moundsville; six great grandchildren, Jason Turner and his wife Tiffany of Moundsville, Crystal Turner of Westminster, Md., Wendy Jo Turner of Moundsville, Melissa Shimkus and her husband James of Brandon, Fla., Jo Ann Sanders of Tampa and her husband Robert, serving with the U.S. military in Afghanistan, and John Tennant of Tampa; two great great grandchildren, Zurina Santiago and Cheyenne Sanders of Tampa; a sister-in-law, Winnie (Joe) Toothman of Tennessee; two brothers-in-law, Robert Haught and his wife Mabel of Fairview, and Eugene Utt of Pennsylvania and Florida and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Ruby Haught Toothman in 1980; his son, Danny Toothman in 2005; a daughter-in-law, Rose Mary Toothman; two brothers, Arlie Toothman and Joe Toothman; and three sisters, Hazel (Ralph) Barr and Mary (Pete) Mercer and Martha Toothman, who died in infancy.
