Mr. Shearer was a retired Electronic Engineering Technician from Texas A&M University. In 1962, he was employed as a broadcast engineer for Station KBTX-TV. He was appointed in 1965 to head A&M's closed circuit Educational TV system. As Chief Engineer, he was the mainstay behind the technical operation of Texas A&M's PBS station, KAMU-TV. He was later employed by the Texas A&M Instructional Media Services Department.

He was very much a sports enthusiast and enjoyed numerous hobbies including Astronomy and Herpetology, and was an Amateur Radio Operator (WA5BKG). He loved going camping with his family, flying remote control airplanes and building model rockets. He was the oldest member of the Homeless" team of the City of College Station Slow Pitch softball league and was a marathon runner, running local 5 and 10K races. He was a member of the local astronomer's club, the Civil War Roundtable, and was a Mason at the Wellborn Lodge.
