Born Jakob Edvard Nilson to Nils Eliassen and Bertha Kristine Ådnesdtr on the island of Karmøy. He immigrated to the United States around 1885 and settled first in Winneshiek County, Iowa.

He married Jane Louise Ellingson and they were the parents of eleven children.

Edward and his family moved to Harmony, Minnesota around 1913 where he was a successful businessman and operator of a creamery.
