Joseph David "Hosea" Sutherland was born to Joseph Lyman and Emma Ardosca Minear Sutherland in Bandera, Texas on September 1, 1862.

He married Margaret N. Norris on December 25, 1889 in Bandera, Texas.

Nine children were born to this union, two preceding him in death. They were Stockton and Ohlsen Sutherland. Surviving him besides his wife were three sons, David of Point Arthur, George and James Sutherland of Engleside; four daughters, Mrs. Dot Smith of Medina, Mrs. Elma Lane of Ingram, Mrs. Neomi Jones of Danville, Indiana and Mrs. Iona Chiodo of San Antonio. Other survivors included one brother, George Sutherland of Center Point; four sisters, Mrs. Nathan Braley, and Mrs. D. S. Palmer of Medina, Mrs. Maude Bradford of Wichita, Kansas and Mrs. Jeannette Nevert of California.

Hosea and his family spent their entire life in Bandera County, Texas. He passed away July 28, 1941 in Medina and is buried in the Oak Rest Cemetery in Bandera, Texas.
