Lucy was born in Connecticut and moved to Iowa with her family. Later, they relocated to the Chicago area at the time of the World's Fair. While living there, she met her husband, Joseph Sims Dean, and married him. The Dean family next moved to Michigan, near Stanton. When Joseph died, Lucy moved the children to Grand Rapids, living in a house on Arthur street. Then they moved to a farm on what is now the corner of Dean Lake and Aberdeen. Lucy lived there until the time of her death.
