Davis was most likely a son of Conrad Neese (1778 SC - 1820 SC) and (possibly but not proven) Elizabeth Kennerly (1784 SC - bef 1840 SC). He married Margaret Neese on 05 Jan 1830 in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Margaret was the daughter of Henry Neese (1795 SC - 1848 SC) and Mary Anna Pence Neese (1791 SC - 1842 SC). Davis and Margaret Neese were the parents of 10 children: (1) Mahala Ann Neese (1831 SC - ? AL); (2) John Thomas Neese (1833 SC - 1924 AL); (3)William Louis Neese (1836 SC - 1862 AL), a Civil War casualty; (4) James Britton Neese (1841 SC - aft 1899 AL); (5) Dorus Elmore Neese (1844 SC - abt 1900 AL); (6)Henry Neese (1848 GA - aft Jul 1893 AL); (7) Sarah Ann Burley (adopted daughter)(1849 GA - aft 1860 AL);(8) Daniel Jacob Leonard Neese (1850-1850 AL), died as an infant; (9) Alexander Neese (1852 AL - 1915 AL); (10) Jacob Franklin Neese (1854 AL - 1893 MS).

Davis was listed on the 1860 census for Choctaw county, Alabama, living near Mount Sterling. He received a settlement of $26.03 in 1864 for the back pay of his son, William Louis Neese, who died in 1863 in a Mobile, Alabama hospital of wounds sustained during the Civil War. Only two sons can be found on the 1870 census, James Britton Neese and Dorus Elmore Neese, who relocated to the Mobile county area by 1870 and are listed with young wives. It is most likely that Davis and Margaret Neese were still living on their land in Choctaw county in 1870, but were not enumerated on the census. By 1880, Davis' wife, Margaret, was listed as a widow living with their son, Alexander Neese. Therefore, Davis could have been living as late as 1879, but died sometime between 1864 and 1880, most likely in Choctaw county. His death must have prompted Margaret to relocate to the Mobile area to be near her surviving sons. Contributed by Susan Clark Neese.
