Davis was listed on the 1860 census for Choctaw county, Alabama, living near Mount Sterling. He received a settlement of $26.03 in 1864 for the back pay of his son, William Louis Neese, who died in 1863 in a Mobile, Alabama hospital of wounds sustained during the Civil War. Only two sons can be found on the 1870 census, James Britton Neese and Dorus Elmore Neese, who relocated to the Mobile county area by 1870 and are listed with young wives. It is most likely that Davis and Margaret Neese were still living on their land in Choctaw county in 1870, but were not enumerated on the census. By 1880, Davis' wife, Margaret, was listed as a widow living with their son, Alexander Neese. Therefore, Davis could have been living as late as 1879, but died sometime between 1864 and 1880, most likely in Choctaw county. His death must have prompted Margaret to relocate to the Mobile area to be near her surviving sons. Contributed by Susan Clark Neese.
