He was born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. He was a Baptist preacher, ordained at Little Buck Head Creek Baptist Church, Burke County, Georgia, on May 9, 1847. He is a son of Zachariah Dew and Sarah Peel Dew.

He first married Elizabeth Atkinson, daughter of Jeremiah John Atkinson and Sarah Brinson Atkinson, of Burke County, Georgia, February 28, 1838.
Thomas and Elizabeth had 4 daughters - Sarah Ann Dew born 1843 and Ruth Ann Dew born June 17, 1846, both in Burke County, Georgia, Martha Ann Dew born 1849 and Mary Ann Dew born 1851, both in Dale County, Alabama.
Elizabeth died before 1870. Her place of burial is not know to me at this time.
In the 1850 Census, he and Elizabeth are in Dale County, Alabama.

About 1871 in Washington county, Florida, Thomas married Caroline Slay, born Oct 14, 1837 in Alabama, daughter of William Slay and Selimea Thompson. They had 1 daughter, Lizzie Caroline Dew (Long) born January 23, 1872 in Washington County, Florida. Caroline died June 23, 1872 in Baldwin County Alabama and is buried in Perdido Baptist Church Cemetery, Perdido, Baldwin County, Alabama.

His grandson, Miley Dew Moates, is buried next to him. His slab simply has TS DEW. The cemetery is listed as Grace Point, but is behind/connected to Beulah Baptist Church
