John immigrated to the United States during 1881, first living in Pennsylvania. Marriage records show he married Anna Schabala on Nov. 17, 1885 in Cambria, Cambria County, PA. She was the first of his three wives with first name Anna, all immigrants from Slovakia. They had two children born in PA, Mary born during Sept. 1886 and Michael J born Nov. 4, 1888.

Apparently, John’s first wife died soon after Michael’s birth in PA, and John and their two children moved to Culdrum Township, Morrison County, MN. Marriage records have John Hlad and Annie Gonas marrying on Jan. 26, 1891, in Morrison County. The June 1895 Culdrum census has John age 32, wife Annie 24 and children Mary 9, John 8 (both born PA) plus John Jr. 4 and George 2 months old, born MN.

John’s second wife died on Mar. 3, 1908, at age 36. The Apr. 1910 Culdrum census has John a widower at age 48 with the following offspring: Mike age 22, born PA, with the rest born MN: John 18, George 15, Annie 12, Andrew 10 and Irene 3.

The Jan. 1920 Culdrum census has John age 59, his third wife Annie 48 and the following children: George 24, Elizabeth 17, Irene 14 and Agnes 14. Elizabeth and Agnes are obviously children of the third wife as clarified in the Apr. 1930 Culdrum census where John is 67, Anna 58 and the only remaining child is his “stepdaughter” Elizabeth Johns 27, born Ohio.

John’s third wife Anna died on July 24, 1930, and John passed away on Feb. 27, 1949, outliving all three of his “Anna” wives.
