Son of William and Louise J. Boyle Atkeson who were married July 2, 1837. Before the war he was a merchant in Warrensburg, Missouri. At the beginning of the War he served as 2nd Lt. in Co. E. 3rd Infantry Regiment, 8th Division, Missouri State Guard. He resigned on November 22, 1861. Barnett enlisted in Co. A. 5th Missouri Infantry on December 2, 1861. He was promoted to 1st Lt. September 1, 1862 and to Captain on June 27, 1863. He was captured at the surrender of Vicksburg, Mississippi in July, 1863, but later exchanged.
