Mr. and Mrs. Howard A. Johnson of West Lebanon, ME. announce the engagement of their daughter Florence, of Lenox, to Chester F. Lorenz, son of Curt Lorenz and the late Mrs. Lorenz of 46 Melrose Avenue. Miss Johnson is a graduate of Nasson College, Springvale ME, and was dietitian at the Howard Johnson Restaurant on the Lenox Road, before it was closed for the duration. Mr. Lorenz is a graduate of Pittsfield High School and attended Berkshire Business College, and is employed by General Electric Company. He is a member of the Crescent Lodge of Masons, and the Young GOP Club.
PITTSFIELD, Mass. - Fire investigators blame a faulty lamb cord for a weekend blaze that killed a 77-year old woman. Fire chief Gerald Keehnle said firefighters found Florence Lorenz collapsed on the floor of a bedroom after a neighbor reported heavy smoke coming from her home on Sunday afternoon. Lorenz was pronounced dead on arrival at Berkshire Medical Center, he said Deputy Chief Ronald Mazzeo, the department's arson investigator, said the fire was confined to the living room and extinguished with in 10 minutes. But he said the entire first floor was filled with smoke and investigator believe the lamp cord had been smoldering from hours.

The funeral of Florence J. Lorenz, 76, of 47 Whittier Ave., who died Sunday in Berkshire Medical Center of smoke inhalation as the result of a fire in her home, will be conducted on Wednesday afternoon in First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Pittsfield Cemetery. Wellington Funeral Home is in charge. Calling hours are this afternoon and evening. Fire officials determined that a faulty electrical lamp cord in the living room of her 1 1/2 -story Cap Cod house caused the fire. She sold Avon products for more than 25 years in Berkshire County. Born on Fishers Island, N. Y., she moved to West Lebanon, Maine, in her youth and then to Pittsfield in 1938. She graduated from Lebanon Academy. In 1934, she was graduated from Nasson College in Springvale, Maine. She was a member of First Baptist Church, its Women's League and its Billie Harris Chapter. She was a former Sunday school instructor and a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Pittsfield. Her husband, Chester P. Lorenz, died in 1985. She leaves a son, Howard of Pittsfield; a sister, Alice Hodsdon of Yarmouth, Maine; and two grandchildren. Contributions may be made to teh First Baptist Church memorial fund through the funeral home.
