George W. Kent died in Jay, New York, May 8, 1920, after a brief illness of five days, of pneumonia.

Mr. Kent was one of the last surviving Civil War veterans, having enlisted at the outbreak of the war, and served in Company I, 77th New York Regular Volunteers for four years until the close of the war. Battles his regiment saw were Williamsburg, Harrison's Landing, Antietam, Maryes Heights and Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Battle of the Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor, Battle of Winchester, Fisher's Hill, Battle of Cedar Creek, Fort Fischer and Petersburg. The regiment was present at the Appomattox Court House and the surrender of Lee. From there they marched to Washington, D.C., where the regiment was mustered out.

On November 7, 1866, he married Rebecca Coolidge of Jay. To them were born four children, three sons and a daughter, one son and daughter dying in infancy.

Mr. Kent was born July 1, 1841, at Keene, the son of Lincoln William Kent and Mary Colby Huntington Kent, and the greater portion of his life he spent in farming. About 1890 he purchased the farm where he died and his neighbors testify to his sterling worth for they called him a "good neighbor," and say "he was always ready to lend a helping hand in time of trouble." Mr. Kent was a very conscientious man striving fo live by that commandment which says, "Do unto others as ye would that they should do unto you." He was a lifelong Democrat and served the town in various offices. Mr. Kent was a devoted member of Tahawus Lodge No. 790, F. & A. M., being one of its oldest members.

On Monday, May 10, the funeral service was held from his late home in Jay, the Rev. George Baker, assisted by Rev. G. H. Manhold, officiating. The interment was in the family plot in Central cemetery, services at the grave being conducted by the Masonic order.

Mr. Kent is survived by two sons, Benjamin L. Kent and Albert L. Kent, both of Jay.
