David Matthew Thomas 1962 ~ 2008 "Food Dude"

The Food Dude passed away on Friday, February 22, 2008 from conditions related to melanoma cancer in his brain. Ever strong, brave and determined, he turned a 3-6 month prognosis into over 10 years, and the latest doctor prediction of two weeks into 3 months.

He was born January 21, 1962, the son of Martin Duane and Jean Penrose Thomas. He was named for an uncle who had the same birthday. David was well known for his spicy cooking. Often he would brew up a pot of joy and share it around town with his friends, neighbors and family. His rib sauce was legendary. His collection of cookbooks, knives, and catering equipment was vast, taking up much of his kitchen space. He loved the outdoors. He spent a lot of time hiking and skiing. He enjoyed driving around in his vintage dodger blue Karmann Ghia, sporting a Cat in the Hat top hat. He collected and played guitars, even after suffering his first stroke. He was forced to give up playing following a second stroke a few years later. He loved all kinds of music and was especially fond of the blues.

After being diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma, David renewed his goal of eating a good meal in the capital city of every US state. He loved to travel, and took a bus trip by himself, planning a route through several states he had not yet visited. He celebrated the attainment of the goal by taking his son on a cruise to Alaska in 2003 and having a meal in Juneau. Earlier in his life he traveled to Europe and had great memories from that experience.

David attended Woods Cross High School and graduated from the University of Utah with a BA in Political Science and French. For a time he lived in Maryland and Pennsylvania. He loved to learn and even after the strokes, when he struggled to write, kept his mind active by acing crossword puzzles. He loved his family and friends and shared photos and stories of them with visitors.

He enjoyed the fact that he was already an uncle at birth and while growing up, called his three contemporary nephews and one niece his "cousins" to avoid confusion.

He was a member of the LDS Church and was visited and watched over by loving friends in two wards.

David is survived by his father, Martin; a son, Britain Thomas; Britain's mother, Belinda; his siblings: Shelley and Melvin Stanley, Jeffrey and Wendy Thomas, Samuel and Linda Thomas, Misty and Zan Larsen; 32 nieces and nephews, many wonderful cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his sweet mother and his closest nephew, who both passed away in 2007.

In memory of him, the Food Dude would like you to enjoy a good meal.
