Earl Ira "Tug" Garl was the son of Isaac and Mary A. Garl. He served in Co. E, 157th Indiana Infantry during the Spanish American War in the time period of 26 Apr 1898 to 01 Nov 1898. Returning to Elkhart, IN he worked for the railroad a short time and then was an electrician for the City of Elkhart for a few years. About 1905 he joined the Elkhart Fire Depatment. While working as a fireman at the central fire station he also did much of the wiring of the new central fire station, then under construction.

He married Florence "Maude" Phillips 23 Jul 1903 at a Justice's office in South Bend, IN.

On 11 Dec 1908 he was in the second floor dormitory of the fire station when an alarm came in. Rushing to the 'pole' to slide down to the main floor, he slipped on the newly waxed floor and fell headfirst through the hole around the pole and down to the main floor. He died at the firehouse within a short time.
His funeral was held at his home, 818 Garfield Ave. Delegations from area fire departments came to his funeral from Goshen, South Bend, Mishawaka, LaPorte, and as far away as Kalamazoo, MI. Also at his funeral were a great many area Spanish American War veterans and an honor guard from Co. E in Elkhart which gave him a rifle fire salute.
Earl and Maude Garl had a daughter, Phyllis. He had known siblings: Lily, Royal, Maude, and Jenny.
