Gwendolyn "Gwen" J. Patrick, 82, of Kirkland, Ill. died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, at Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb.

She was born March 8, 1928, in Geneva, the daughter of James D. and Mabel S. (Seanor) Edwards. She married Sam Patrick on June 21, 1950, at the First United Methodist Church in Kirkland. Gwen taught fifth-grade at Washington School in Belvidere for over 25 years. She attended Stevens College in Colombia, Mo., and graduated from the University of Wyoming, Jackson Hole, with a bachelor's degree in journalism, then went to Northern Illinois University to get her teaching certificate. She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Kirkland, and was a member of the Kirkland Village Board.
She is survived by her husband, Sam Patrick of Kirkland; children, Meredith Halsne of Minneapolis, Minn., Joan (Greg) Goergen of Cary, Mike (Janet) Patrick of New Holland, and Pamela (Sidney) Glass of Florence, S.C.; grandchildren, Ross (Molly) Halsne of Minneapolis, Grant (Katie) Halsne of Minneapolis, Jay Halsne of Minneapolis, Kristopher Goergen of Cary, Jenny (Chris) Boyer of Dallas, Texas, Kyle Goergen of Cary, Emilly (Brandon) Neale of Cornland, Jill Patrick of New Holland, Kate Glass of Florence, S.C., and Meredith Glass of Florence, S.C.; one great-grandson; sister, Jackie (Hank) Marvick of Leland; and many nieces and nephews.She was predeceased by her parents; and sister, Marcia Wirsing.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, at First United Methodist Church, 300 W. South St., Kirkland, with Pastor Pam Rossmiller officiating. Interment will be in Maple Cemetery in Kirkland. A visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Olson Funeral & Cremation Services, Ltd., Quiram-Kirkland Chapel, 309 S. Fifth Street, Kirkland, IL 60146.

A memorial fund has been established for American Lung Association.
