George "Calvin" Carpenter was born in Catawba County, NC to Jacob and Mary M (Ramsauer) Carpenter.
Although most War records found say J C Carpenter, in "History of Gordon County" a list men from Gordon County, GA shows under Privates, Calvin Carpenter . This is under Co. C., 8th GA. Battalion, Gist-Walker Division, Recruited from Gordon County, GA, Oct. 11, 1861. He was at the Marshall Hospital in Columbus, Georgia in August, 1864 but returned to his regiment at a later date.
A Carpenter Family Bible lists George Calvert Carpenter (Calvin likely his nickname), his birth date and that he died on November 30, 1864 at the Battle of Franklin, TN. Another Carpenter Family History document also gives his name as George Calvert Carpenter.
Two war documents found, list him as George C Carpenter in this same company and battalion. The grave stone shown in the photo also shows G. C. C.
