OBITUARY
DeOrval John Schatz, lifetime resident of Tonkawa, died Saturday, May 22, 1989 at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center. He was 67.

The son of George and Thursa Harris Schatz, he was born September 7,1921, in Tonkawa. He attended Tonkawa Schools and Northern Oklahoma College.

During World War II he served as a liaison pilot with the Army Air Corps. He was decorated with the Air Medal, X6 Oak Clusters, and five Battle Stars. Mrs. Schatz was an air observation pilot on military aircraft for a field artillery battalion, observing enemy installations and activities and then radioing the information to ground troops for firing. He also made reconnaissance flights to secure information regarding the condition of terrain, and the selection of convoy routes. He served in the European Theater of Operations for 18 months.

During the war, DeOrval was also one of those instrumental in helping to rescue the famous Lipizzaner stallions.

Following his discharge in 1945, he worked as an area farmer and for William Rock Bit for 18 years.

Mr. Schatz was a lifetime member of the Christian Church, the VFW, and the American Legion.

Surviving are three sons, two brothers, two sisters, and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Thursa; his father, George, and a brother, Bud Schatz.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church of Tonkawa, with the Rev. Ray Brooks officiating. Committal service will follow at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of the McCafferty-Bolick Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Schatz's name to the United Way.
