A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in York November 11, 1862, & mustered into federal service November 13 as a private with Co. E, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry, aka "Drafted Militia." Became seriously ill near the close of his service & unable to march. Honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863.
