Billy Joe Sewell was born on December 23, 1927 in Cherry Creek, Pontotoc County, Mississippi. He was the son of Leonard Adolphus Sewell and Jimmie Clyde Pitts, and the brother of James Leonard Sewell. Billy enlisted in the Navy on August 26, 1942. He served throughout the war on the USS Croatan. He is first mustered on board the ship on April 28, 1943 and was on board until January 10, 1945.
After the war, he married Ella Ruth Perry and they had two children, Kathryn and Perry Leonard. They lived in Pontotoc where Billy worked for the Pontotoc Electric Power Association for over fifty years. Billy and Ruth were active their church and always involved in the activities of their children.
Billy died on January 25, 2011 in Pontotoc.
