Josephine Barbara Deay Rystrom, 88, of Stromsburg, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011, at the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.

Josephine was born Oct. 18, 1922, on a farm, to Verne and Dora (Renner) Deay. Her mother passed away three weeks after her birth and she and her siblings were raised by her dad. Jo started rural school at the age of 4. She attended Liberty School for eight years and graduated from Osceola High School in 1939. She attended summer school at Wayne State College and taught in several rural schools near Polk and Osceola.

Jo married Mervin Rystrom on February 6, 1943. They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in 2010. Mervin served in the Army Air Corps and she joined him in Oklahoma City in 1943. She moved back to Stromsburg when he was sent overseas in 1944. After Mervin's discharge, they moved to a farm southeast of Stromsburg. In 1953, they moved to a farm southwest of Stromsburg and in 1980, they moved into Stromsburg. Jo moved into the Midwest Covenant Home in 2007. Jo and Mervin had five children, Barbara, Martin, Laurel, Patricia and Jon.

Jo was very active in the United Methodist Church and was a member for over 60 years. She held several offices in the United Methodist Women, was church secretary, a Sunday school teacher and director of Vacation Bible School. She also served on the Pastor Parish Committee, membership and memorial committees. Jo also held offices in the Friendly Family Extension Club which led to serving as president of the Polk County Extension for two years and she was District E director for the Nebraska State Extension Council for two years. She was also a 4-H leader for seven years. She was a member of the Stromsburg Legion Auxiliary and served as president. She was honored as a Gold Star mother in 1993, when her son, Jon, was lost at sea in a Navel accident. She worked several years at the local Jack and Jill store and as a waitress at the "Bit of Sweden."

Survivors include: daughters, Barbara (and husband, Gary) Dean of Fremont, Laurel (and husband, Jim) Parsley of Columbus, Pat (and husband, Ken) Everingham of Stromsburg; son, Martin (and wife, Maria) Rystrom of Boston, Mass.; daughter-in-law, Kris Emmert of Bristol, Tenn; ten grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Shirley Deay and Carol Rystrom. She will be missed by other relatives and many friends.

Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Mervin; parents, Verne and Dora; son, Commander Jon A. Rystrom; two sisters, Arloa Yungdahl and Neola Anderson; and one brother, Vaughn Deay.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Midwest Covenant Home Chapel in Stromsburg with the Rev. Dan Spearow officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Midwest Covenant Home. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Midwest Covenant Home or the Stromsburg United Methodist Church.
