Henry appeared in the 1860 U.S. Census for Washington County, IL as Henry Horstman but enlisted for Civil War service as Henry Veatch in Co. C, 5th Indiana Cavalry, as a drummer boy at 13 years of age, Aug. 9, 1862. He was mustered out of service at Pulaski, TN, June 15, 1865. He applied for an invalid soldier's pension Dec. 26, 1893 which was approved and issued as Certificate #875540 in California under the name of Henry Veatch. In many instances Civil War volunteers enlisted using aliases for personal reasons.

Henry was given the honorary title of "Colonel" for 30 years of service in Oroville's William T. Sherman Post, Grand Army of the Republic.

He was given title of Gridley, California's "Grand Old Man" and the Museum building in Gridley and a street in Oroville were named after him. He was the last living Civil War veteran in Butte County, CA and was so honored on Veterans Day 2010 sponsored by the George Wright Camp 22, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.
