Harold McClung Smith, 101, of Lexington, VA, passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at Kendal at Lexington. Harold was born on February 27, 1914 in Rockbridge County. He was predeceased by his parents, Watt H. and Willie Page Smith, his wife, Reba Natalie Craft Smith, brother, Roy Smith, and sisters, Elizabeth Fix and Eleanor Straub. He is survived by one sister, Maebell Whitesell. Harold also leaves behind three generations of nieces; and nephews; and many friends in the Lexington community. Harold enlisted in the 146th Army Air Corp Systems in 1942 and served four years during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific Theater as a specialist in radio communications and aircraft navigation and landing systems. Registered in the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., Harold was a very patriotic man and proud of his service to our country. Harold was a graduate of Temple University, Philadelphia, Pa., Dunsmore Business School, Staunton, Va. and Danville Technical College, Danville, Va. For many years, Harold and wife Reba (Bunny) lived in New Jersey where he was employed as a union electrician. He was a former member of the Woodbury, N. J. Moose, the Knights of Pythias and the National Guard. After retirement, he and Bunny moved back to Lexington. He was a member of the Lexington Lions Club, and a member of Manly Memorial Baptist Church where he served on the Buildings and Grounds Committee. Harold was also a volunteer for the Meals for Shut-ins program for many years. What he most enjoyed was travel across this country and abroad.The Funeral Service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, October 26, 2015 at Harrison Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Thomas Harvey and the Rev. David Shreve officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will be private at the New Monmouth Cemetery. Contributions may be made in his memory to the Rockbridge Area Hospice, 315 Myers Street, Lexington, Va. 24450. Arrangements by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, VA.
