Born on June 24, 1924, a native of Chicago, IL, Fr. Philip attended St. Margaret of Scotland grade school before enrolling in Mt. Carmel Prep Seminary in Niagara Falls, Ontario to study for the priesthood in the Carmelite Order.
He made his simple profession of vows at the Carmelite Novitiate in New Baltimore, PA, on August 15, 1944 and his solemn vows on September 28, 1947 at White Friars Hall, in Washington, D.C. Philip Joseph Nessinger was ordained a priest in Washington, D.C., on June 6, 1950.
Following ordination, he was assigned to various parishes of the Chicago Province: St. Cyril's in Chicago, IL; Mt. Carmel in Houston, TX; St. Cecilia's in Englewood, NJ; St. John's in Mississauga, Ontario; Mt. Carmel in Fairfield, CA; St. Paul the Apostle in Gurnee, IL; and St. Matthew's in Glendale Heights, IL. He also served at St. Gregory's parish in the Archdiocese of Toronto, Ontario.
In 2000 Fr. Philip retired to Carmelite Carefree Village in Darien, IL. In 2002 he moved to Mother Theresa Home in Lemont, IL, where he was at the time of his death.

Rev. Philip J. Nessinger, O.Carm., died Monday, December 13, 2004 at the age of 80. Son of the late Henry P. Nessinger and Margaret Freund; brother of Margaret Curtiss, Loretta Hodges, Marie Bartak and Henry Nessinger.
Graduate of Mount Carmel High School, Chicago. He entered the Carmelite Order in 1944 and ordained a priest in 1950. His ministry to the church is marked by service to several parishes including St. Matthew Parish, Glendale Heights, IL and St. Paul the Apostle, Gurnee, IL. As well as Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, Houston, TX and was the founding pastor of St. John of the Cross Parish, Mississauga, ONT, Canada.
Wake services, 4 to 7 p.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, December 16, 2004, National Shrine of St. Therese, 8501 Bailey Road, Darien, IL 60561.
Burial, 11 a.m., Friday, December 17, 2004, Mount Olivet Cemetery, Chicago, IL.
