Civil War Private. Mustered in at Madison, WI, 14 Dec 1861, at age 16. Assigned to Com I, 12th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry. Reported present on all company muster rolls from December 1861 to July 1865. Reenlisted for additional three years while stationed at Hebron, Mississippi. Sworn in at Natches, Mississippi on January 5 1864. Mustered out at Louisville, KY. There is no evidence that he was on furlough for that entire period. 1887 was a member of the G. A. R. Post, Cedar Rapids, Nebraska.
As a Union soldier, Hayes & his brother James were Union soldiers at the same time as their father, Lewis. Their father was wounded & died, at the age of 45, during the Battle of Atlanta. Hayes was with his father when he was fatally wounded in the fighting.
