Benjamin F. Boone was a graduate of the Louisville Law School and passed his bar exams in 1851 in New York City at the age of 23. He was considered one of the leading attorneys in Arkansas, and represented Washington County in the State Legislature for three sessions. He joined the Yell Rangers under General Ben McCulloch before the war; they engaged in spying for the Confederate cause. He enlisted in Colonel Brooks' 20th Regiment of Arkansas Militia, rose to 1st Lieutenant, then Captain before being appointed as its Judge Advocate. In the battle of Prairie Grove on December 7, 1862, he was hit in the thigh by a cannonball which shattered the bone. He lived for three months, suffering excruciating pain, and died on March 1, 1863, less than 50 miles from his home and family. He and his wife are buried in the Boone Cemetery, a few miles south of Elkins, Arkansas.
