Alfred Yoakum, a life-long resident of Athens, died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Opan Shanle at 11:25 a.m. Thursday, December 3. He was 90 years old.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 5 at Mott & Henning Funeral Home in Athens with Rev. Billy Sexton officiating. Burial was in Hall Cemetery, Athens.
Mr. Yoakum was born January 22, 1880, the son of Robert and Victoria Levitt Yoakum. He was married to Miss Margaret Neff in June of 1901, and she preceded him in death July 16, 1964.
Boge, as his friends called him, retired in 1949 from the Peabody Coal Mine of Springfield (No. 59). He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He mined coal during the winter months as was a hay baler during the summer.
He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Rowena Forden of Petersburg, Mrs. Aldena Curvey of Waveland, Mrs. Opal Shanle of Athens and Mrs. Edith Wilhelm of Astoria; two sons, Carl of Athens and Marshall of Petersburg; one sister, Mrs. Mary Ferguson of Athens; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were David Shanle of Athens, Richard Yoakum of Kenosha, Wis., Robert Carl Yoakum of Mechanicsburg Road, Marshall Lee Yoakum Jr. of Petersburg, Larry Minikin of Springfield and Kenneth Holler of Athens.
