OBITUARY
JOHN DIETRICH HOFFMAN
John Dietrich Hoffman , one of the last of the old time business men of Hudson, passed away at his home on Second streetearly Sunday morning, of old age, which had been gradually undermining his health for more than a year. His passing out was as quiet and peaceful as he had always lived. the funeral took place from St. Patricks church Tuesday morning and interment was made in the Catholic cemetery. Rev. Father cunningham of Hammond officiating.
John Dietrich Hoffman was born in Hanover, Germany August 30, 1846, and landed in the United States the same month that marked the assassination of President Lincoln in 1865. For a number of years he traveled in the south and he launched into business in Mobile, Alabama.
He came to St. Paul in 1872 and two years later he moved to Hudson where he has since resided. He went to work for Luck & Gees as a baker. Their place of business was located about on the site where the Jones book store now stands.
On May 1, 1876, Mr. Hoffman went into business for himself on lower Second street, only to be burned out four years later. He then opened a store at 412 Second street and continued at that stand until he gave up actual work ten years ago.
He married Augusta Reinke in this city Sept. 4, 1875 and to them were born seven children, of whom three and Mrs. Hoffman are living. They are Mrs. Emma Hammill, Mrs. Marie Hellweg and Joseph Hoffman. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. He also has one sister living in Germany.
Coming to Hudson when it was a new town Mr. Hoffman saw it grow to the thriving town that it now is. There was never a move for the public good, for the betterment of civic or religious advancement, for the relieving of personal suffering, which might come that Mr. Hoffman did not contribute somewhat more than his share of labor, time or financial support. Public spirited in the extreme, in his quiet way he took great pride in his home, family, church and community and was ever a faithful husband, father, citizen and friend of all mankind. the passing of Mr.. Hoffman marks the end of one of the oldest of Hudson's business men, there being only one or two more who had engaged in business in the early years of this city.
Mr. Hoffmann (sic) has served as a member of the board of trustees of St. Patricks church, of which he was a most faithful communicant and tireless worker. He was a charter member of the local court of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin and he also served on the city council and the school board.
Those from out of the city who attended the funeral were Mrs. C. Reinke, Otto Reinke and Mrs. A Dommer of Cosmos, Minn., Mrs. David Rombaugh and Miss Irma Bandy of St. Paul.
