Corporal Carsten was born in Reno, Nevada on 11 June 1964 and attended Thornton High School in Thornton, Colorado. He began his Marine Corps career as a reservist and attended recruit training at MCRD San Diego, California in April 1982. Upon graduating, he began aircraft mechanics training at NAS Memphis, Tennessee, and completed training while assigned t TME-23 MCAS Beaufort, South Carolina. Corporal Carsten returned hme to serve in reserve units at Aurora, Colorado and NAS Fallon, Nevada. He enlisted on active duty with the Marine Corps on 14 February 1984 receiving orders to VMAT-202, MAG-14, 2d MAW, Cherry Point. In September of 1984 he successfully qualified as an A-6 plane Captain. While at Cherry Point he served with VMAT-202, MWHS-2 and in October 1986 was assigned duty with H&MS-14. Corporal Carsten awards include the good conduct medal and rifle expert.

Corporal Carsten passed away on Tuesday, 25 August 1987. Services will be held Monday, 31 August, 1987 in Sparks, Nevada.

Corporal Carsten is survived by his loving wife Tracie, daughter Treva and son Robert Earl II.

He is also survived by his father John Carsten of Fallon, Nevada, mother Lena Arroyo of Sun Valley, Nevada, sisters: Sue (Carsten) Lewelling of Fresno, California, Johna Carsten of Seattle, Washington, Kathy (Carsten) Kent of Sparks, Nevada and Ida (Rusconi) Johnson of Sun Valley, Nevada and brothers, John C. Carsten Jr of Oceanside, Califonia, William Carsten of Newport Beach, California and Richard Carsten of Sparks, Nevada. He is also survived by his grandparents, Mike and Kate Carsten of Fresno, Califonia.
