Born: Downer's Grove "Walker News" dated Feb 22, 1907: Funeral of W R Cherry Conducted Sunday by Odd Fellow Order. He was always a man of substantial worth and influence in his community and had been active and prominent along many lines, gaining special distinction in Odd Fellowship, in which he filled many positions of honor and trust. He was a charter member of Unadilla lodge at Troy Mills and at the time of his death was grand representative of Linn County to the grand lodge of Iowa. He always took an active interest in public affairs and had served as treasurer of his school district for 25 years. In politics he was a republican and had represented his township as a member of the county central committee. He was the eldest son of Joseph and Susan Cherry. When 7 years old he moved with his parents to Central City, IA, where they remained 2 years, going to the farm which has been the Cherry home for 41 years. He bought and improved his present place, known as Highland farm, which has been his home for 23 years. He was united in marriage Oct 4, 1877, to Miss Susanna Shaffer. To this union were born 4 sons, Joseph E, Alfred C, Edward D and Elmer F, and one daughter, Ida M. The eldest son died 4/26/1882. Mr Cherry is survived by his wife, 3 sons, a daughter, father, mother, 2 brothers, and 4 sisters, all of whom were present at the funeral 1 brother and 1 sister,who found it impossible to attend. Funeral services were conducted Sunday from the M P Church at Troy Mills, the sermon being by Rev L M Starr of Marion. The services were in charge of the I O O F, being conducted by Past Grand Master Boyder, assisted by H C Ring of Marion.
